Selling mailing lists can prove to be a profitable sideline to your mail order business. Many dealers count on "direct mail" to promote their services or goods. They are really always serious about good, fresh prospects. The most famous classifications of names are "Opportunity Seekers", "Cash Customers" and "Mail Order Dealers". Mail order dealers include the easiest names to acquire. To get them,, all you want do is copy the names & addresses of advertisers from current mail order trade publications. For the good variety of mail order magazines and newspapers, and answer ads for "Big Mails".
"Opportunity Seekers" are those which can be searching for ways to earn additional money. "Cash Customers" are simply just people that have made purchases.
Never copy somebody else's lists. This could involve you in "copyright infringement", a federal offense. Also, you could be duplicating old, stale lists. To be successful, your names & addresses has to be fresh and accurate. This will keep the customers coming back over and over. To begin, you need a computer or a person to type the names in your case. Look in your Classifieds under "Secretarial Services". Or, contact mail order dealers who sell names. Most of them can do your typing at reasonable rates. Another suggestion is usually to contact the typing teacher of your local high school or business college. Students love to earn spending money-and it's good practice on their behalf, too.
The easiest way to get the names typed is across the page. Use white paper and a fresh black or red typewriter ribbon-never blue. Each 8 1/2" x 11" page will easily hold 50 names. Each page should be carefully coded in both upper corner regarding the page number, classification and date typed. Use any code you want, but among the easiest is a lot like this: "3CC10169". This means page 3, cash customers, typed October 16, 1999.
The date is very important. People change addresses rapidly with this country. Names over half a year old could possibly be outdated. After this length of time, it is best to throw these names away. Or, you may make a "follow-up" mailing to every name on your lists. Send these letters top notch together with your return address plainly visible. People that are "nixies" (undeliverable for just one reason or other), ought to be deleted. Rather than typing the complete corrected list over again, you may have replacement names typed on the separate notepad. Then carefully cut out and paste another one name over each name that is not usable.
After the names are neatly typed,, bring them for your printer. It costs about 3 cents to 4 cents to obtain each sheet printed, in case you order 100 copies each time. Because of this every 100 copies of every page will set you back between $3 and $4, but will be worth $100.00 to $300.00 -depending on what you want to charge per 100 names.
